Pemako Hotels Expands With Paro Property Opening in 2029

Bhutan’s first homegrown luxury hotel group, Pemako Hotels, is setting the stage for its next chapter — and it’s as breathtaking as the landscapes the brand calls home. With a third property set to open in Paro in 2029, Pemako will soon offer guests an unforgettable journey through Bhutan’s three key destinations, each infused with the country’s rare blend of natural beauty, deep tradition, and genuine hospitality. Pemako, meaning "hidden lotus-shaped land", is already redefining luxury in Bhutan with its two acclaimed properties.

Pemako Punakha – an immersive collection of opulent tented pool villas designed by the legendary Bill Bensley, offering guests a deep connection to nature.

Pemako Thimphu – an urban sanctuary in the heart of Bhutan’s capital, blending contemporary elegance with Bhutanese artistry.

Why Paro?

Paro isn’t just Bhutan’s gateway — it’s a living museum of history, spirituality, and natural wonder. Home to the country’s only international airport, this charming valley is surrounded by quaint villages, timeworn temples, and ancient monasteries — 155 of them, some dating back to the 14th century. It’s a place where past and present exist in harmony, making it the perfect canvas for Pemako’s next masterpiece.

For the new Paro property, Pemako is partnering with the world-renowned Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the Danish architectural powerhouse behind Bhutan’s pioneering Gelephu Mindfulness City. The collaboration promises a property that stays true to Pemako’s soul — authentic Bhutanese experiences — while embracing architectural innovation.

Luxury, Bhutanese Style

Pemako’s vision of luxury isn’t about excess — it’s about balance. Rooted in Bhutanese culture, each property pairs indulgent comfort with a mindful connection to nature and community. Guests can expect serene surroundings, striking architecture, and culinary experiences rich in local flavours.

  • Pemako Punakha is Bhutan’s first luxury tented resort, set in 60 acres of forest and riverside beauty. Its 21 pool villas feature private heated pools, copper fixtures, Bhutanese design elements, and panoramic decks. Five dining venues and a Sowa Rigpa-inspired spa complete the experience.

  • Pemako Thimphu boasts 66 suites and rooms with sweeping mountain views, a fortress-inspired façade, a tea lounge, curated dining, and a wellness sanctuary — all in the vibrant heart of the capital.

A Brand with Heart

Pemako is more than a collection of hotels — it’s a cultural ambassador for Bhutan. Founded by Mr. Wangchuk Dorji, co-owner of the Tashi Group, Pemako was born from a desire to share the beauty and warmth of Bhutanese hospitality with the world. The brand’s impact is felt not just by its guests, but by its people — 99% of employees are local, and the hotels prioritise sourcing from Bhutanese farmers and producers.

Bhutan is a uniquely untouched land with a self-nurtured culture and tradition, says Mr. Dorji. “I want to share a little slice of my special country with every visitor, offering them an authentic Bhutanese experience that stays with them forever.”

Global Horizons

While Pemako’s heart will always be in Bhutan, its ambitions extend far beyond the Himalayas. “Whilst Pemako remains a local brand, we have the aspirational goal to go global,” says Mr. Dorji. “In the next 5–8 years, we hope to be internationally present and look forward to sharing more news in years to come.”

The Pemako Promise

Pemako’s expansion into Paro is more than the opening of a new hotel — it’s an invitation to experience Bhutan in its most authentic, luxurious, and inspiring form. Whether you’re seeking a riverside sanctuary, a cultural city escape, or a spiritual valley retreat, Pemako promises a journey beyond the ordinary.

Pemako Paro will welcome its first guests in 2029 — and it’s already shaping up to be a destination worth the wait. For now, take a look at Pemako here for more information on visiting them.
